how does one tell if the fork lift is 36v or48v

The data tag on the forklift will tell you the voltage – there is a section on it that will list either 36 or 48 volts. If the data tag is missing or illegible you can count the cells in the battery – 18 cells is 36 volts, 24 cells is 48 volts.
